Frequently Asked Questions & Tips

How can I pay? We accept cash and checks.

What should I consider when hiring a contractor? Although cost is a factor, other criteria should be weighed, such as:

  • Does the contractor have a current country license? Hire only licensed contractors.  You can check the contractor's status by calling the State Corporation Commission or doing a license check with the county.  We are licensed with Stafford County
  • Is the contractor properly insured?  Be aware that if the contractor is not properly insured and someone gets hurt, the liability falls on you as the homeowner.
  • Get three references and review past work.
  • Get three bids.
  • Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms.
  • Hire someone who agrees to a 10% or $1,000 deposit, whichever is less.
  • Don't make final payment until you're satisfied with the job.
  • Don't pay cash.  If you choose to pay in cash, be sure to obtain a signed receipt to serve as proof of payment.
  • Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.

What is faux finishing? Faux finishing is a painting technique used to creat the illusion of texture on a wall.  We perform speciality finishes including sponging, ragging, multi-fleck and furniture finishes.

Which color is right for the exterior of my house? The right color can keep a small house from looking smaller, split-levels from looking top-heavy and colonials from seeming awkwardly tall.  Here are some tips to follow when considering colors:

  • Consider the style of your home. Select light colors for smaller homes to lessen the difference between the body and the trim. Contrast is favorable with some home styles (Victorian, for example), to accentuate architectural features. Slightly darker colors on larger homes can look powerful.
  • Pay attention to the static colors of your home. Brick, stone, unpainted masonry or roof shingles should complement the exterior paint color you are considering.
  • Find out about local restrictions. Many historic areas and homeowner's associations provide a list of "recommended colors" or require that your selections be approved.
  • Pay attention to your neighbors' homes. While you want your home to be distinctive from your neighbors, you don't want to select a color that will clash with the surrounding homes.
  • Pay attention to your environment.  Pick a color that agrees with the conditions around your home.
